SMTP Settings

By default Fundament sends emails through Fundament’s own mail server. Instead, the organization’s own SMTP server can be configured, so all outgoing emails come from the organization’s own domain (e.g. contact@example-foundation.org).

Configuring the SMTP settings

Owners set up the SMTP server under Settings → Email, in the SMTP Settings section. The following is needed:

  • Host: address of the mail server (e.g. smtp.example.com); Fundament connects on port 465 (SSL/TLS)
  • Email: the address shown as the sender
  • Username: only if the server requires a username other than the email address
  • Password: stored encrypted and not shown again; to change it, simply enter a new one

What is sent through the organization’s SMTP

Once SMTP is configured, the organization’s outgoing emails are sent through it, including:

  • Emails from automations
  • Emails sent manually from an application
  • Emails from batch operations
  • System emails related to the organization, such as confirmations to applicants and login emails from the organization’s portal

Checking the settings

Fundament does not test the connection on saving. After the setup, a test email sent from an application (for example to one’s own address) shows whether it arrives and carries the right sender. If sending fails, Fundament shows an error message at that point; the settings then need to be corrected or removed again.
